One day in Bamberg is enough for four or five brewery visits on foot: Schlenkerla (Dominikanerstraße 6) and Spezial as the morning Rauchbier pair, Mahrs BrĂ€u (Wunderburg 10) and Keesmann (Wunderburg 5) as the lunchtime pair, FĂ€ssla (Obere Königstraße 19) in the afternoon on the way back to the station. Greifenklau (beer cellar, seasonal) is an optional detour with the best view over the city.

What You Need for This Day

  • Comfortable shoes (5–7 km walking depending on route)
  • Cash (not all taverns accept card)
  • No car — you will be drinking
  • Return train pre-booked: Bamberg → Nuremberg / Munich
  • Reservation for evening recommended, especially Schlenkerla

The Route — Step by Step

10:00 — Arrive Bamberg Station

Most visitors arrive by train. The station is west of the old town, about 15 minutes on foot. Directly opposite: Brauerei FĂ€ssla. If you want an early start, a short stop here is fine — but we recommend walking into the old town first to get the lay of the land.

10:30 — Bamberg Old Town, First Impressions

Bamberg is one of the best-preserved medieval town centres in Germany. The old town sits on seven hills — not for nothing is it called "Franconian Rome." Walk to the Altes Rathaus on its island in the river, cross the Regnitz, then down Dominikanerstraße. You'll see the Schlenkerla sign.

11:30 — Brauerei Schlenkerla

This is the mandatory stop. The Rauchbier MÀrzen at late-morning time, SchÀuferla if you're hungry. At least one Seidla. The historic vaulted cellar is less crowded at midday than evenings.

Address: Dominikanerstraße 6 · Open: Daily from 9:30am

13:00 — Brauerei Spezial

Ten minutes on foot. The other smoked beer — milder, direct comparison possible. One Seidla here makes the difference between Schlenkerla and Spezial immediately clear.

14:30 — Mahrs BrĂ€u

Mahrs is in the Wunderburg district, about 20 minutes' walk from the old town. The Ungespundetes direct from the wooden barrel is the best beer in Bamberg — after Schlenkerla. The tavern is personal, the prices fair. If you can only choose one stop after Schlenkerla: this is it.

16:00 — Greifenklau (if in season)

Visiting between May and October? The climb to Greifenklau is worth it. Stephansberg hill, about 20 minutes' walk, views across the old town, beer under chestnut trees. This is the best photograph of the day.

18:00 — FĂ€ssla or free choice

If capacity allows: FĂ€ssla is on the way back to the station. The Gold-Pils as a final beer, then the train home. Or stay the night.

Is One Day Enough?

For a first overview: yes. For all breweries properly: no. Not because the distances are too great, but because each brewery deserves time. You can rush it — but Bamberg rewards those who don't.
