The Franconian beer cellar season runs from late April to October. For a full picture of what to do in summer see the Franconia in Summer guide. Most cellars only open in dry weather — rain is the one reliable closing reason. The Annafest in Forchheim (late July) and the Bergkirchweih in Erlangen (Whitsun) are the two highlights of the season.

The Golden Rule

No cellar opens in rain. This is not a brewery decision — it's simply not pleasant to sit outside in the wet. If your visit day has rain forecast, call ahead or expect closed doors.

Also: beer cellars often open spontaneously. It's not unusual for a cellar to open on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon without any announcement. If you're in the Fränkische Schweiz and you see an open cellar: go in.

What to Expect Inside

Most beer cellars in the Fränkische Schweiz are not restaurants. Specifically:

Beer Cellar Etiquette

  • Bread and snacks can often be brought in — but not everywhere. Ask first.
  • Beer is the brewery's own only — no "can I also have a X?" from another producer
  • Payment at the table or bar; cash is safer than card
  • Children are welcome — Franconian beer cellars are not bars
  • Long shared wooden benches — just sit down if there's space
  • It will be loud. That is normal and good.

The Annafest — Special Case

The Annafest in Forchheim takes place late July to early August and is one of Franconia's most beautiful folk festivals — less well-known than Oktoberfest, but preferred by many who know both. Up to ten breweries open their cellars simultaneously on the Kellerberg. It is crowded, loud, and wonderful.

For the Annafest: book accommodation in Forchheim well in advance — the town fills up completely.
