Fränkische Schweiz, a landscape region between Bamberg, Bayreuth and Nuremberg, is described by regional tourism sources as having around 70 breweries and belongs to Franconia’s densest beer areas. Especially well known are Aufseß with four breweries and a Guinness record per inhabitant, Hallerndorf with several breweries and beer cellars, the Forchheimer Kellerwald and beer hiking routes such as the Fünf-Seidla-Steig.

Quick Overview

  • Region: landscape area between Bamberg, Bayreuth and Nuremberg
  • Around 70 breweries according to regional tourism sources
  • Many small private and family-run breweries, often with a tavern, cellar or local-only distribution
  • Good bases: Forchheim, Ebermannstadt, Bamberg, Hallerndorf/Kreuzberg and Aufseß
  • Typical beers: Kellerbier, Lager, Dunkel, Märzen, Zwickel and seasonal beers
  • Best season: May to September for beer cellars, but always check opening hours directly
  • Important: whoever drives does not drink. For beer trips, plan public transport, taxi, accommodation or marked hiking routes.

What Is Fränkische Schweiz?

Fränkische Schweiz is not a political region, but a landscape name for part of Upper Franconia in the triangle between Bamberg, Bayreuth and Nuremberg. It is known for limestone cliffs, caves, valleys, forests, castles, small villages and an unusually dense beer and cellar culture.

The region is often promoted as one of the world’s densest brewery areas. As a travel description, that is understandable. But the cleanly verifiable world-record wording belongs to Aufseß, where the record is about brewery density per inhabitant. For the wider Fränkische Schweiz, the safer wording is: one of Franconia’s densest and most interesting beer regions.

Good Brewery and Cellar Stops

Brauerei Rittmayer and Kreuzberg, Hallerndorf

Hallerndorf is one of the key beer communities in the region. The municipality lists several breweries and beer cellars, including Lieberth, Witzgall, Roppelt and Rittmayer. Historically, the municipality says five brewing sites are still continued today. So “six active breweries” is too imprecise.

Brauerei Rittmayer traces its brewing tradition back to 1422 and is based in Hallerndorf, An der Mark 1. The Rittmayer-Keller am Kreuzberg, Kreuzberg 3, directly below the pilgrimage church, is especially well known. According to Rittmayer, the Keller rests on rainy days.

Brewery address: An der Mark 1, 91352 Hallerndorf
Cellar: Rittmayer-Keller am Kreuzberg, Kreuzberg 3, 91352 Hallerndorf
Note: Check current opening hours and weather operation directly.

Brauereigaststätte Hölzlein, Lohndorf

Hölzlein in Lohndorf is a classic small brewery tavern in the Bamberg area and a good stop for anyone who likes small Franconian breweries. The address listed by Bamberg tourism is Ellertalstraße 13, 96123 Litzendorf-Lohndorf. Vollbier is listed as the most popular beer.

The old text with “Lohndorf 25” was not reliably confirmed and has been removed. Hölzlein is not a large tourist operation, but an honest brewery tavern with limited opening hours. Check before visiting.

Address: Ellertalstraße 13, 96123 Litzendorf-Lohndorf
Note: Check opening hours before visiting.

Brauhaus am Kreuzberg, Schnaid

The old section “Brauerei Friedel, Schnaid” was unclear. Cleaner wording: on the Kreuzberg in Schnaid you find Brauhaus am Kreuzberg, Kreuzberg 1, 91352 Hallerndorf. According to its own site, it opens seasonally in 2026, with different days in spring, summer, autumn and winter.

This is a strong stop for beer, Keller atmosphere, food and the Kreuzberg setting. But as always: do not travel blindly, check season and opening hours directly.

Address: Kreuzberg 1, 91352 Hallerndorf
Note: Check seasonal opening hours, closing days and reservations directly.

Brauerei-Gasthof Kundmüller, Weiher

Kundmüller in Weiher is not in the tight core of the Fränkische Schweiz, but it works well as a regional additional stop: large brewery inn, beer garden, guesthouse, beer museum and more reliable opening hours than many small village cellars. The address is Weiher 13, 96191 Viereth-Trunstadt.

The brewery is known for Weiherer beers and a broad beer range. For visitors, Kundmüller is especially practical if you want a more predictable stop with tavern and beer garden.

Address: Weiher 13, 96191 Viereth-Trunstadt
Note: Wednesday is listed as rest day in current opening hours, check details directly.

Brauerei Drei Kronen, Memmelsdorf

Drei Kronen in Memmelsdorf lies just outside Bamberg and therefore more on the edge of a classic Fränkische-Schweiz route. For a first approach to the wider beer region, however, the brewery inn works well: easy to reach, hotel, tavern, brewery tours and long brewing tradition. The brewery names 1457 as its first documented mention.

As a beer stop, Drei Kronen makes sense if you combine Bamberg, Memmelsdorf and Fränkische Schweiz. For a deeper village-brewery trip, Hallerndorf, Aufseß, Forchheim or the smaller rural places are more typical.

Address: Hauptstraße 19, 96117 Memmelsdorf

Getting There

The honest answer: it depends on what you want to do. For scenery, small places and remote Keller, a car is practical. For drinking beer, a car is the worst solution if the driver wants to taste. So: car only with a sober driver, otherwise plan public transport, taxis, accommodation or hiking routes.

The Golden Rule

Whoever drives does not drink. In Fränkische Schweiz, “only five kilometres further” can sound harmless, but small roads, hills, bends, villages and beer do not belong together at the wheel.

If beer is the focus, hiking routes are the better idea: Fünf-Seidla-Steig, Aufseßer Brauereienweg, Forchheimer Kellerwald or a brewery village with overnight accommodation. Then the car stays parked and the day becomes much more relaxed.

What to Order

The safe choice is almost always the beer served locally as Hausbier, Kellerbier, Vollbier, Lager or Märzen. In small breweries, freshness and place matter more than variety. If there is Kellerbier or Zwickel, start there. If a brewery has only one main beer, that is usually the right order.

Opening hours, closing days, beer garden operation and draught availability can change quickly at small places. Check the website, Google listing or phone directly before travelling.
