Franconian beer cellar season runs roughly from April to October. Many Keller start in April or May, and the most reliable period is usually May to September. October is quieter: some cellars close earlier, others stay open longer or switch to inn service. Important: beer cellars often open depending on weather. Always check the current website, social media page or Google listing before visiting. Erlanger Bergkirchweih and Annafest in Forchheim are the major season highlights.

The Season at a Glance

This overview is a practical orientation, not a fixed calendar. Every Keller decides its own season start, rest days, weather operation and special openings.

The Main Rule: Check First

For beer cellars, the weather forecast is almost as important as the opening time. Many Keller open only in good or dry weather. Rain, cold, staffing, rest days, holidays or private events can mean a cellar stays closed.

So the rule is simple: check directly the day before or on the day. Website, Instagram/Facebook, Google Business listing or a quick phone call are more reliable than old blog posts or general season claims.

Small Keller in particular can open or close spontaneously. If you are already nearby and see an open Keller, go in. If you are travelling specially, check first.

What to Expect in a Bierkeller

Many Franconian beer cellars are deliberately simple: beer, benches, trees, Brotzeit, sometimes warm food, sometimes only cold dishes. That is part of the charm.

Franconian Beer Cellar Etiquette

  • Brotzeit: Bringing food is allowed at some cellars, but not everywhere. Always check or ask first.
  • Drinks: Always buy drinks from the Keller. Bringing your own drinks is not okay.
  • Beer choice: Often one specific local brewery is served, but not every Keller is directly brewery-owned.
  • Payment: Cash is safer than card, especially at small or rural Keller.
  • Seats: Long benches are often shared. If there is space, ask politely and sit down.
  • Children: Many Keller are family-friendly, but evenings and festivals can get loud and crowded.
  • Respect: Keller are social, but not a drinking challenge. Plan water, food and the trip home.

Erlanger Bergkirchweih

Erlanger Bergkirchweih is one of the major highlights of the Franconian Keller season. It takes place on the site of historic rock cellars on the Burgberg and lasts twelve days. For 2026, it is scheduled from 21 May to 1 June.

The Berch is not a quiet Keller evening, but a large folk festival. If you want it calmer, go during the day or on weekdays. Evenings and weekends get much busier.

Annafest in Forchheim

Annafest takes place in the Forchheimer Kellerwald and is one of Franconia’s most important Keller festivals. For 2026, the official Annafest page lists 25 July to 3 August. Other local calendars may list the start slightly differently, so check the final date before travelling.

The Kellerwald is also interesting outside Annafest. The city of Forchheim describes the Kellerwald as having 23 managed cellars. But not all cellars are open at the same time outside the festival. Always check which Keller are actually open on the day.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

For relaxed beer cellar trips, May, June and September are often especially good. July and August are strong, but famous places may be busier. October can be beautiful, but less reliable because some cellars have already closed or open only in good weather.

If you only have one weekend, plan two possible Keller and check both shortly before travelling. That way you do not end up in front of a closed gate if weather or rest days get in the way.
