Zoigl is a bottom-fermented, unfiltered and usually low-carbonation beer brewed in communal brewhouses in the Upper Palatinate. Citizens with brewing rights ferment their own batch and serve it in private taverns, called Zoiglstuben. Service is traditionally signalled by a six-pointed Zoigl star. Genuine Zoigl is associated with five places: Windischeschenbach, Neuhaus near Windischeschenbach, Eslarn, Falkenberg and Mitterteich.
Zoigl at a Glance

- No two Zoigl beers taste exactly the same because different people brew them
What Is Zoigl?
Zoigl is not a normal beer from a single commercial brewery. It comes from a communal brewing tradition. In the Zoigl towns, historic Kommunbrauhäuser, communal brewhouses, are shared by citizens who hold old brewing rights. They brew the wort there, take it home, ferment it themselves and later serve it in their own Zoigl tavern.
When Zoigl is being served, a Zoigl star, a six-pointed wooden or metal brewer's star, hangs outside. It means: Zoigl is available today. Historically, that star was the main signal. Today, official Zoigl calendars also publish the rotating service dates.
The Five Genuine Zoigl Places
Genuine Zoigl from communal brewers is traditionally associated with five places in the Upper Palatinate. Important: Neuhaus here means Neuhaus near Windischeschenbach, not Neuhaus an der Pegnitz.
| Place | Region | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Windischeschenbach | Upper Palatinate, Neustadt an der Waldnaab district | Best-known Zoigl town, together with Neuhaus often called the capital of Zoigl beer |
| Neuhaus near Windischeschenbach | Upper Palatinate, Neustadt an der Waldnaab district | District of Windischeschenbach and central to the Zoigl tradition |
| Eslarn | Upper Palatinate, Neustadt an der Waldnaab district | Zoigl town near the Czech border |
| Falkenberg | Upper Palatinate, Tirschenreuth district | Small place with a strong communal brewing tradition |
| Mitterteich | Upper Palatinate, Tirschenreuth district | Town with its own communal brewhouse and Zoigl tradition |
What Makes Zoigl Special?
No two Zoigl beers taste exactly alike. The brewers use the same communal brewhouses, but each works with their own habits, experience and recipes. The result is related but never standardised: unfiltered, fresh, characterful and local.
Zoigl is also not beer designed for export. It is not built as a large brand. It is served in the local tavern until the batch is gone. Then it is over until the next serving date.
Zoigl Is Not a Classic Beer Style
Strictly speaking, Zoigl is less a beer style than a brewing and serving tradition. The decisive elements are not only the flavour, but where it is brewed, who brews it and how it is served. The communal brewer, the brewing right, the communal brewhouse, the Zoigl tavern and the star belong together.
That is why Zoigl feels so distinctive for visitors. You are not simply drinking a beer. You are visiting a local institution. It is closer to an open house than to normal hospitality.
Zoigl and Franconia
Strictly speaking, Zoigl belongs to the Upper Palatinate, not Franconia. For Find My Seidla it still belongs in the northern Bavarian beer context because it is reachable from Nuremberg, Bayreuth, Fränkische Schweiz and the Fichtelgebirge, and it shows the same kind of beer culture: small, local, unstaged and strongly tied to place and community.
If you like Franconian Kellerbier, Zoigl will make sense. Not because it is the same beer, but because the attitude is similar: no big brand, no show, no tourist theatre. Just a place, a brewing right, a beer and people at the table.
Important for Planning
- The Zoigl places are in the Upper Palatinate, not in central Franconia
- Check the Zoigl calendar before travelling
- Neuhaus means Neuhaus near Windischeschenbach, not Neuhaus an der Pegnitz
- Bring cash
- An overnight stay or sober driver is strongly recommended
